SMTP Service won’t run but SharePoint needs it!

So just a quick post this evening about an SMTP Error I was seeing on a Windows 2003 server with IIS 6.0…
I was trying to get a server ready to load-balance several sites but without SMTP running, the email alerts/notifications would fail.
SMTP was installed but simply wouldn’t start.  The error message was vague – "Could not start the SMTP service on Local Computer. Error 193: 0xc1" and, unfortunately, there wasn’t any information in the server logs.
After posting on a Microsoft partner forum and getting some recommendations, we removed the server from the SharePoint farm (after we backed up our highly customized web.config files first of course!), uninstalled IIS then reinstalled IIS.  Yep, that did it.  SMTP is now running smoothly.
Now back to the regularly-scheduled program which is adding that server back into the farm and load-balancing the SharePoint sites.
Happy SharePointing!
