Using Windows Update to update System Center SP1 Operation Manager to UR2 running on Windows 2012

I was recently working with Cameron Fuller (http://blogs.catapultsystems.com/cfuller/) and we decided to give Windows Update a try to get new a new OpsMgr Installation updated to the currently release before we started pushing OpsMgr Agents. Here is how we did it…

First off, this process for new installations of Operations Manager 2012 SP1 on Windows 2012 and you have not deployed any OpsMgr Clients yet. If you are in a fully managed environment using ConfigMgr or WSUS for updates, same principles apply except for the the first part of the blog about enabling Windows Update to check for other products. Also, if you are using WSUS or ConfigMgr you will need to also need to approve UR2 to your OpsMgr Clients. You will not be able to push the update from OpsMgr server.

If you have an existing environment, and prefer to manually install UR2, see Kevin Holman’s blog here:

Getting it all setup

A quick way to tell if you are in an environment where updates are being managed by WSUS or ConfigMgr is you will see the following screen when you run Windows Update from Control Panel:

If you can get to Windows Update online, select the link “Check online for updates from Windows Update”

Once Windows Update performs a scan of the server, select the “Find out more” link where the Windows Update applet displays “Get updates for other Microsoft Products.”

Here is where it get tricky, once you click on the Find out more link, you are taken to  the Welcome page for Microsoft Update. In IE10 on Windows 2012, the add-on fails to run.

Basically what you have is an ActiveX control that is marked safe for scripting. By default, in Windows 2012, this setting is disabled. All you have to do is enable it. What you need to get is the screen below for the Get updates for Windows, Office and more to appear so you can agree to the license terms. I know, your saying Why would I want to do that! Look, this blog is about how can use it, not about the whys and why not’s about Windows Update.  I already let you know about Kevin’s article on manually doing it!

I am sure there are a 100 different ways to do this. This is just one of them so don’t start flaming me just yet! Smile

Anyways, Enable Get Updates for Windows Office and more licenses check.

Once you do, you will get this screen saying that Microsoft Update was successfully installed.

Applying UR2 using Windows Update

Once you finish with all that mess, Windows Update should now show OpsMgr 2012 SP1 UR2. The below screenshot shows Update Rollup 2 for all the components on my RMSe server. I just install just like I would any other update.

My other OpsMgr servers show the components installed on the server that need to be updated.

As Kevin Holman points out in his blog, there are two optional MPs in UR2 that are located in Update Rollup MPs C:\Program Files\System Center 2012\Operations Manager\Server\Management Packs for Update Rollups. If you want to install these, you will need to install the show as normal in the There are 2 management packs included in UR2 that are optional, when you first try to add the Intelli Trace Profiling, you will receive an error, you will need to add in the intelliTrace Collector Deployment from the SP1 media.

Well, that’s about it for installing Update Rollup 2 from Windows Update. Afterwards, you can start deploying agents. Agents will report back that are at the correct SP level. To verify go to Operations Manager > Agent Details > Agents by Version State View.

Happy Monitoring everyone! And watch for Cameron’s blog on how to update your Windows 8 Consoles! Smile
