Microsoft Office Mobile 1.0 now available for iPhones! What you need to know
Microsoft has released Office for iPhone! All iPhone users can download it, however, only users with an active Office 365 subscription can use it.
In the Apple App Store, search for Microsoft Office or Microsoft Office Mobile
After downloading and opening the app, the next step is to sign in with your Office 365 Subscription.
Then enter an email address associated with an Office 365 Subscription
After successfully signing in, you should then see three sample documents, Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint samples.
Upon opening the Same Word document you are greeted with a read-only view of a document.
When you are done editing the sample document, you can click on the left arrow in the top left of the screen to exit.
You are then prompted to save, cancel or delete changes.
If you decide to save changes, you are then given an opportunity to name the document and select a location to save it. Note: the on-screen keyboard slightly covers the choices, so you need to click the Return button in the bottom right if you want to scroll down to select the Skydrive Pro. Otherwise it defaults to the consumer version of Skydrive.
My first experience using Office Mobile 1.0
I wish my first experience was successful but unfortunately I have to report that when trying to save a document (Word or Excel, does not matter) to Skydrive Pro, the application crashed instantly. I have tried multiple times and it is consistent and repeatable on every attempt. I shut down the iPhone with the SMC reset technique to flush the memory and that did not resolve the problem.
In further testing, I found that saving to Skydrive (consumer) works fine, but not Skydrive Pro. In case you are wondering what the difference is between Skydrive and Skydrive Pro, the latter replaces “My Sites” in the Wave 15 version of Office 365 and uses SharePoint Online as the back-end storage. The former is the consumer version of Skydrive (previously renamed from Windows Live in 2007).
The upside is that the default save location is Skydrive, not Skydrive Pro. The downside, is the user might not be aware of the difference between the two, so when they go to save and type in their office 365 information, it will fail to logon because they may not have an existing Skydrive account.
So what works right now is signing in with your Office 365 account and saving to a Skydrive consumer account but not your Skydrive Pro account.
This happened on an iPhone running the latest release 6.1.3, and the current release of Microsoft Office Mobile 1.0.0 (15.0.1805.1900)
Compatible with iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPod touch (5th generation) with 50MB free space.
Both Federated and Online Identities work
I tested both federated and regular online identities and they both worked with Microsoft Office Mobile.
Office 365 Wave 14 or 15 both work but…
If your Office 365 subscription has not been upgraded to Wave 15 (the latest version that looks like Exchange 2013), then the user will not have the option to save to Skydrive Pro, because that option is only available in Wave 15.
A user that is still on the Wave 14 tenant will see the option to save to SkyDrive, but the SkyDrive Pro option will not be visible.
If you are an Office 365 administrator, and if you are not sure whether your tenant has not been upgraded (ahem, you should know) but let’s say you wanted to “double check” then here is the powershell cmdlet to run:
Get-OrganizationConfig | Format-List Name, Admindisplayversion, IsUpgradingOrganization

IsUpgradingOrganization : False
As you can see, the AdminDisplayVersion still reports version 14 where an upgraded tenant that runs the Wave 15 products would report something like 15.0.586.12 to indicate version 15.
Office 365 License Requirements
Depending on whether you have an Enterprise subscription or a Small business subscription, there are different licensing requirements.
Of the Enterprise plans, only the E3 plan includes Office for iPhone according to this requirement page.
However, in my testing, I was able to use the application using only an Exchange Online Plan 2 license.
Office Small business Plan P1 doesn’t support the Office Mobile apps.
