Digital Transformation: Why Now?

The Digital Transformation? It’s only the most transformational time in human history. You’re living in the era that marks a holistic integration of technology into human activity.

Has the 20th century canon of dystopian novels come to fruition? Is WestWorld’s human vs machine narrative so chilling because, well… what is the difference between your mind and a computer processing system again?

Let’s pause for a check in: Why should this vague buzzword, Digital Transformation, serve as the platform on which I assess and solve business challenges?

What is Digital Transformation?

Microsoft defines it by the four pillars of Digital Transformation

  1. Engaging customers
  2. Empowering Employees
  3. Optimizing Operations
  4. Transforming products

In addition, I’d like to focus on Digital Transformation’s context: the place where technology and human converge. After all, we’re discussing the practical application of a global phenomenon, not an isolated instance.

Why Digital Transformation?

Because we can. And when the world evolves, it’s in our best interest to adapt. Let’s consider two specific examples where human intelligence has evolved by converging with technology:

Process and Calculation: This is where digital capabilities like automation and analytics come into play. Prior to our age of information, one intelligent human’s reasoning skills were a decent match for its exposure to information. Now, we’re adapting the way we digest useful material to exploit a more saturated pool of data.

How? By amplifying human intellect through a digital medium. Amplifying, not replacing.

The same concept applies to automation. To thrive in an increasingly complex work environment, we must adapt the way we process and complete tasks by allowing technology to pick up where human bandwidth leaves off.

Identity and Voice: Let’s imagine your employee portal or intranet as your company’s digital personality. It composites the qualities – voice, view, value, and vision – that amount your organization to more than just a transactional machine. It’s where employees meet across departments, countries, and generations to move towards a common goal, under a common identity.

The concept of corporate personality isn’t new; but just as we use social media to stake vocal claim within a digital chatter swarm (and to essentially remind others we exist)—the same goes for internal and external corporate identity.

As a business intends on growing in the digital era, traditional methods of communication end up casting a too-small net over an organization’s sprawling identity, resulting in fragmentary connection and dissonant ideas.

But you already know this – hence your digital investments.

So then why, despite the fact that we all KNOW how critical digital tools are today, do we doubt our investments? Why do we struggle to leverage them in a way that delivers obvious ROI?
