I’m a geek – and I get it. It’s not reasonable to expect that people will carry with books on a regular basis. As a consultant we are on different client sites on a regular basis and it’s really difficult to lug around one (or more) technical books. To hear that “see page 601 of so-and-so book” for the answer doesn’t help me now which is why I’m looking for the answer in the first place. So I g...

We just wrapped up attending the MMS 2010 Keynote by Bob Muglia this morning which was a really good session. There was too much good stuff to go through in details, so what we’re going to do is hit the highlights that we saw during the session:
1) Official releases of both System Center Data Protection Manager 2010 and System Center Service Manager 2010!
2) Demonstration of a Distributed A...

The next keynote just wrapped up and there was a lot of good information. Here’s our top 9 items we heard in order of importance:
1) System Center Roadmap: New versions in 2011 for Operations Manager, Virtual Machine Manager, Configuration Manager, Service Manager R2, Windows Intune V1. New versions in 2011: Data Protection Manager, Forefront Endpoint Protection, System Center Essentials....

I spent some time today working through a query that would gather what applications that I had in my environment which were from Adobe. I worked through the existing reports and couldn’t find anything that would give me the results for all Adobe% applications for a specific collection and would provide that information down to the file level. The following is the results which can be pasted int...

The System Center Configuration Manager 2007 Unleashed book has been released (ok… it was released on August 3rd but I’ve been running a little behind)! There are some incredibly deep ConfigMgr people who worked under the leadership of Kerrie Meyler (the lead author of OpsMgr 2007 and MOM 2005 Unleashed). Authors and contributors on this book include Byron Holt, Greg Ramsey, Jason Sandys, Janne...

I was looking for a simple way to identify what systems existed in our environment which were not running at the service pack levels which we require in our environment (and patches which are not current). As a quick starting point, there are two existing reports which give a lot of this information:
Count Operating Systems and Service Packs: Shows the breakdown of each Operating System inclu...

I needed to be able to export the information from the “All Systems” query in Configuration Manager so that I could chop it up in Excel. I specifically needed to get the workstation/server name and the IP address information so that I could determine what systems would be receiving the ConfigMgr agent. Export the members of the query to a file and go, right? Well it wasn’t that obvious. If I do...

The November edition of TechNet magazine is now available online at: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/default.aspx?pr=blog. This edition includes three articles that I consider to be especially interesting:
Monitoring Windows Server 2008 with OpsMgr 2007 by Pete Zerger.
Granular Targeting In Operations Manager 2007 by Steve Rachui.
Using Configuration Manager with Windows Ser...
