UI Changes after converting a Log Analytics workspace to the new query language

In the first part of this blog series I discussed some of the new capabilities available for Power BI with the release of the new query language. In this blog post I will identify some of the user interface changes which you will see after your workspace has been converted. In the third part of this series I will take a look at how we can get our OMS workspace data to refresh properly in Power BI.

Removal of the large icons on the left side:

The large icons on the left side (Log Search, My Dashboard, Solutions Gallery, Usage, etc) is removed after upgrade to the new type of workspace (before upgrade/after shown below):

Change to “My Dashboard’:

It appears that if you do not have a custom configuration for “My Dashboard’, the icon is removed (before upgrade/after shown below):

If the workspace does have a “My Dashboard” defined then the icon still appears as shown below.

After the upgrade the “My Dashboard” functionality should now be read-only per the FAQ.

As a general rule, the “My Dashboard” functionality is being replaced by both custom solutions and the ability to pin items to the Azure dashboard so as a general rule I would not recommend using the “My Dashboard” functionality.

Upgrade Summary tab:

After the upgrade they add the Upgrade Summary tab which gives you the option to restore your workspace to the legacy configuration.

Legacy Language Converter:

When using the log search you now also see the legacy language converter option:

Power BI changes:

And you now have the changes to the Power BI preview functionality and how it is shown in the new workspace.

Summary: There are several minor changes to the user experience once you have upgraded your workspace but none of them should cause any significant challenges for people who have been working with the user experience for a while. Did I miss something that changed? If so please post it here!
