IBM X3650 M2, SAN Attached, Issues booting to local drives

Tags: Operating Systems
Technorati Tags:

Our team has several IBM X3650 M2 servers that we were configuring to have access to one of our SANs. When working on the first of these servers the Operating System installed without an issue but as soon as the LUNs were attached the server would not longer boot to the local drives. The following is the resolution that was found for the issue:

  • Start by rebooting the system and when you see the prompt to hit F1, you hit the F1 key which takes you to the System Configuration and Boot Management screen.
  • Boot Manager should be an option on the left side, approximately the fifth entry. Use your cursor keys to highlight it and hit the Enter key which should take you to the Boot Manager screen.
  • Highlight the Add Boot Option entry, around the first entry, and hit Enter.
  • Scroll down until you highlight Legacy Only and hit enter.
  • Once you do that, the changes should require you to commit the changes. Commit the changes.
  • Go back to the Boot Manager screen. You should see an option to Change Boot Order. Highlight that and hit the Enter key.
  • On that screen, you should see your Legacy Only as the last option. Highlight it and hit Enter.
  • Use your cursor key to move that above Hard Disk 0. Make sure that you hit the Commit key after you complete the move.
  • Bring the system down, connect your fibre cables, and reboot. This change should allow the system to boot to the local drives instead of the SAN.

Thank you to Gelila Wallace who tracked this issue down and found the resolution!

We are having a go round of a similar problem here. I was wondering which OS was being used in this case of the x3650 M2 not booting after the SAN was attached. More particularly we're using ESX and I am wondering if the level or version of ESX is relevant. If this problem was with a direct Windows boot than the ESX is out of the picture??

We were installing Windows Server 2008 on the system. From what I have seen on this I do not believe that the version of the OS or level of ESX would be relevant.

Cameron, you rock! We just spent 3 hours trying to fix this and who knows how long it would have been before we fixed it ourselves. I can't believe IBM would do this. This is the stupidest thing I've seen. Why would IBM change this just by adding LUNs to a server? This is completely back a55words.

Good post on this problem. One thing is that it not only IBM but all sever and PC manufacture are moving to the new version of “BIOS” platform: the “uEFI” (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) with by default does not support any DOS base O/S or any legacy O/S. legacy O/S. are any O/S from WIN2k3 down to DOS. Running WIN2K8 should not be a problem. So any time you have a legacy O/S you will need to have it set the legacy boot. For info on “uEFI “http://www.uefi.org/about/

Some cards may also require firmware updates. For example, the QLE2462 had a firmware bug in their lower revs and even with the boot order fix, the system still can't find the internal HDD.

Thanks for the info on the boot order!

Unfortunately I have come across this blog too late. I spent most of the last friday trying to figure out why two x3650 m2's attached to ds3400 wouldn't boot from internal disks, and after several hours came to the same solution. If this uefi thing wasn't sooo slow...

I can't believe IBM did a dumb thing like that, but I'm still not that surprised, it's not their first and certainly not the last...

Your solution is very valuable in our case:
We have x3650m2 with raid 1(internal) and raid 5 (external) controllers. We performed Windows 2003 SP2 standard edition installation and after that we can not reboot the server. This is very important solution from BIOS settings on this server.
Thanks!!!

Dear Cameron,

our environment is similar to your post, IBM x3650 M2, SAS Controller, Total Storage DS4300. Thank you for publishing the solution. Congratulations!

i faced the same problem when setting up Windows 2003 enterprise edition x64 SP2. thanks for the solution!

however, now my SAN drive does not "load" automatically after a reboot. I will have to go to Device Manager -> Disk drives -> DGC RAID 5 SCSI Disk Device, right click, Uninstall. Following which, I will have to Scan for hardware changes.

Only then, can I see my drive through My Computer. Anyone faced the same problem and found a solution for this?
